A Sweater Is a Gauge Decision Before It Is a Design Decision

Two sweaters can look identical in a photo and cost 40% apart, because the difference sits in the gauge and the yarn count, not in the pattern. That is why we quote sweaters from a specification: the gauge fixes the yarn, the yarn fixes the weight, and the weight fixes the price.

Our sweater programme runs from 5gg to 12gg. 12gg reads as a fine retail sweater and is the right starting point for fashion ranges; 7gg is the volume middle ground across Europe and North America; 5gg and 3gg read as chunky knitwear and carry noticeably more yarn per piece. Cable panels, rib trims and jacquard motifs all change the yarn consumption, so the same gauge can still land at different weights.

Construction is the second decision. Jacquard carries the pattern across the panel and is the right tool for repeating motifs and all-over artwork. Intarsia links separate yarn blocks, which keeps large solid colour areas flat and free of carry-over threads on the reverse — usually the better route once artwork exceeds four to six colours in a row.

Everything else follows the sample: sleeve setting (set-in, raglan or dropped shoulder), neck trim, cuff depth, button placket, and the size grade. We fix the grade before sampling, because a size change after the pattern is agreed re-opens the whole knit programme.

Four Sweater Constructions — Same Base MOQ

01 — Plain

Crewneck & V-Neck Sweaters

Plain-body sweaters with the decoration carried by yarn colour, trims and a chest emblem. The most cost-efficient way to build a core range that repeats season after season.

  • Set-in, raglan or dropped shoulder
  • Ribbed crew, V-neck or mock neck
  • Chest jacquard emblem up to 12 cm
  • Best style for repeat programmes
02 — Texture

Cable & Twist Sweaters

Cable panels, rope twists and honeycomb structures knitted into the body. Texture replaces colour as the design language, which keeps yarn sourcing simple and the palette tight.

  • Cable panel width specified per style
  • 5gg–7gg reads best for cables
  • Centre panel or all-over cable
  • Pairs with ribbed hem and cuffs
03 — Pattern

Jacquard Sweaters

All-over or placement jacquard for branded and seasonal ranges. Between four and six colours per row is the practical zone before yarn change cost starts to dominate.

  • Placement or all-over motifs
  • 4–6 colours per row typical
  • Logo knitting with no embroidery step
  • Artwork reviewed before sampling
04 — Colour Block

Intarsia Sweaters

Large solid colour blocks knitted as separate yarn links, flat on the reverse. The cleanest construction for bold colour-blocking and oversized graphic panels.

  • No carry-over threads on the reverse
  • Clean edges between colour blocks
  • Suits oversized graphics and stripes
  • Slightly higher labour per piece

Custom Knit Sweater FAQ

What is the MOQ for custom knit sweaters?

500 pcs per style per colour. Sizes inside a colourway share the minimum, so a 500 pcs order can be split across XS–3XL in one colour. A second colour is a second dye lot and a second 500 pcs minimum.

Jacquard or intarsia — which one does my artwork need?

Jacquard knits the pattern across the panel with carry-over threads on the reverse, which suits repeating motifs and all-over patterns. Intarsia links separate yarn blocks, which keeps large solid colour areas flat and thread-free on the inside. If your artwork has more than 4–6 colours in a row, intarsia is usually the cleaner route.

What gauge should we choose?

Gauge is a hand-feel and cost decision, not a quality decision. 12gg gives a fine, retail-style sweater; 7gg is the middle ground most European buyers pick; 5gg and 3gg read as chunky knitwear. Heavier gauge means more yarn per piece, so cost rises with weight.

Can you match a reference sweater we already sell?

Yes, if you send the physical reference or a detailed photo set with the reverse side, the seam allowance and the cuff construction visible. Gauge, stitch and yarn count are read off the reference and confirmed with a sample before any bulk commitment.

Which size grades can you produce?

EU, US and UK grading from XS to 3XL, or a custom grade built from your measurement chart. Grading is fixed before sampling, because a later size change re-opens the pattern and the knit programme.

How is colour controlled across a sweater programme?

Colour is set against an approved standard with Delta E ≤ 1.0, and bulk is knitted from a single yarn dye lot per colour. If a programme runs across seasons, we hold the dye lot reference so a repeat order does not drift.
